 Archbishop Beltran on the Civil Rights Movement

Most Reverend Eusebius J. Beltran was ordained a priest on May 14, 1960, in Atlanta's Cathedral of Christ the King. For eighteen years, Archbishop Beltran, would minister to the people in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, serving in several parishes and archdiocesan positions. After being inspired by the writings of Martin Luther King Jr. he became very active in the Civil Rights movement. In this interview he shares some of his memories and thoughts on that time in his priesthood.

Father Kenneth Schmidt and Sharon Froom from the Diocese of Kalamazoo, Mich were recently in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City giving a workshop on Trauma Recovery for adult survivors of childhood trauma. This workshop teaches priests, parish staff and mental health professionals how to be first responders to adults who ask for help with their childhood trauma.  Their program came out of the pastoral need to help parishioners deal with their trauma from the past to live a healthier life as adults. Michael Scaperlanda is a Catholic living in Norman. He is a professor of law at the University of Oklahoma and is considered an expert in the area of immigration law. He recently spoke at Saint Joseph’s Old Cathedral about the impact the law known as HB 1804 is having on the Hispanic community in Oklahoma.  

 

Mary Diane Steltenkamp was the first nurse hired by Catholic Charities to lead the Parish Nurse ministry, now known as Faith Based Community Nursing. She has long been an advocate for healing that focuses on the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of a person. In this pod cast Mary Diane touches on a number of issues she says are impacting health care in Oklahoma, in both a positive and negative manner.

 

 
Sister Catherine Powers CND, superintendent of Education for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, had plenty to say when she sat down for a conversation with staff members of the Sooner Catholic. Sister Kay, as she is commonly referred to, spoke on a variety of subjects concerning the state of Catholic education in Oklahoma including what steps should be taken today to develop leaders for Catholic education in the future.
