Jeter was honored during a special Mass and reception at the Pastoral Center and will be given special recognition by Saint Eugene School during Catholic Schools Week. “Mrs. Jeter models her commitment to Catholic school education in many ways, but the one most obvious is her spirituality,” said Suzette Williams, Saint Eugene principal. “This is exemplified in her work on committees, classroom management and her guidance in leading families closer to Christ and one another.” Jeter has been teaching for 26 years. Her ministry began in Ponca City at Saint Mary’s. She then moved to Edmond and was one of the first teachers at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. She has been at Saint Eugene for six years and is teaching kindergarten to 21 5- and 6-year-olds. “The Lord continues to bless me with good health and energy,” said Jeter. “What do I enjoy most about teaching? The love of children and their families that continue to permeate my life spiritually, emotionally and physically.” Jeter’s caring and concern for children is exemplified by her treatment of a small child from New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina. One morning the little girl appeared at the door of Jeter’s classroom. She hoped to join the already overflowing class. Jeter could have dismissed the child, but instead she was willing to accept responsibility for one more young child. This is the second year in a row a Saint Eugene educator has received this award. Last year the award was given to Principal Williams. Saint Eugene serves 361 students in preschool through eighth grade. The mission is to teach in a caring and supportive climate that is dedicated to preserving the values of the Roman Catholic faith, while building a foundation for the future. |
