Catholic Charities:
So Much in a Name
By Tim O’Connor Executive
Director
Catholic Charities…these
two words speak volumes about the practice of our
faith in living the gospel. Our Catholic faith is
enriched through helping works of justice and mercy
given in our communities and parishes. Catholic
Charities makes it possible for every person to
practice his or her faith in serving another person
who is in need.
Last year when we announced our
Catholic Charities appeal, the eyes and ears of
our country were focused on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The widespread destruction of Hurricane Katrina
followed by the devastating flooding in New Orleans
were beyond our comprehension. Our hearts and prayers
were united with those who were trapped by flooding
waters. We each had
to face our own vulnerability and our dependence
on others, especially in times of tragedy. We
saw conditions and the effects of poverty that we
could never believe to be a part of the fabric of
our country.
But in this tragedy, we were
drawn together to offer help. In the days following
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Catholic Charities
received hundreds of calls with offers of help,
people wanting to reach out to the thousands of
persons migrating across our country. Materials
and supplies were generously offered, and volunteers
from numerous parishes came forth to assist with
relocating and sheltering people who left with only
the few things that they could bring in their cars.
More than 30 parishes from all parts of the archdiocese
banded together to make sure that housing and support
services were in place for victims arriving in Oklahoma.
Catholic Charities coordinated and supported the
generous responses and commitments from each parish.
Last year’s appeal was carried on the backs of everyone
who assisted in the relief and recovery efforts
that were needed at that time.
We share a common faith and tradition
that helps us to “do something about the pain, grief
and in-justices seen in the faces of people in need.
Our faith helps us to understand that God’s generosity
is made known by sharing what God has given you
and me. This exchange between the one who
gives and the one who receives is sacred, because
God’s love is exposed.
Our Catholic Charities’ appeal
is the source of all good works that are provided
throughout the year. Our goal of $2.2 million
represents two-thirds of all expenses for those
who need material help, housing or counseling, and
for assisting parishes with their social ministries.
Our help is directed to children, adults and
families living in Oklahoma who are trapped by poverty,
fleeing from persecution or battling depression.
Strong support from this appeal gives Catholic
Charities an edge in responding to needs that other
organizations cannot meet.
The needs in our existing programs
are very critical. Many families are working hard,
but don’t have enough money for food, transportation,
or health care. With your help, Catholic Charities
will be there for them. In addition to our
works across the Archdiocese, we will also affirm
a strong commitment to reach out and serve the very
vulnerable population who spend most of their days
on the streets of Oklahoma City. We will work in
collaboration with many faith groups, community
partners and others to insure that those who struggle
with homelessness are protected and given opportunities
for growth and change. We will embark on this venture
knowing that those whom we reach out to will give
us a greater understanding of God’s love and mercy.
The work of Catholic Charities
is not at its potential without the support of every
person in the archdiocese. Please be generous.
In joining our prayers, talent and support
we stand united in reaching out to those who are
least among us. As we reach out to those in
need, God lifts all of us up.
God Bless You. Tim O’Connor
