Organization of the Year
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

This award recognizes an outstanding parish or voluntary group, including social ministry groups or community organizations, which work with Catholic Charities to promote its mission through service projects or advocacy.

The State Council of the Knights of Columbus has consistently provided support each year for special projects that enhance the work of Catholic Charities.  In 2005, the State Council officers visited Villa Isenbart and Trinity Gardens, two low income senior housing developments in Oklahoma City, where they listened to the stories of the residents who wanted to have a place to spend summer evenings reminiscing.  In response to their need, with the leadership of Al Roux and Willard Patocka, plans were drawn up to construct a covered patio for the senior residents near the community garden on the property.  The State Council raised the funds and provided all the labor and materials needed to complete the project and presented the residents with a gift that continues to help build the spirit of community among in these apartments.

In addition to their support of this special project, the Knights maintain a strong presence in advocacy for pro-life issues and in responding to disasters including Hurricane Katrina with financial and other material support.

Through the community service projects of the Knights of Columbus they model Christian Faith in action and establish a strong Catholic identity in our community.
