Oklahoma Catholics Pray for Pope

St. Gregory's University to Pay Tribute to Pope John Paul II

Pope Spoke to the Masses by Speaking to Each One of Us

A Life Devoted to Love
Pope John Paul II Remembered as Champion of  Human Dignity

April 2, 2005

The announcement of the death of Pope John Paul II, while not totally unexpected, is truly sad.  The world has lost a great leader.  For the past twenty-seven years, Pope John Paul II has courageously spoken out on the issues of peace, freedom and equality.

Pope John Paul II's strong convictions of faith made him a champion for the rights of all people.  He recognized that the beauty and purpose of human life are gifts from God.

He saw a special hope in the young people of the world.  He therefore challenged them to discover the true meaning of human life and to respect all people as brothers and sisters in the Lord.  He motivated all of us to strive for peace by promoting justice.

On behalf of all the Catholic people of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, I express our sorrow upon hearing of the death of Pope John Paul II.  I call upon our people and all people of good will to join us in prayer for the repose of the soul of Pope John Paul II.  May he have eternal peace and rest with the Lord.

Most Rev. Eusebius J. Beltran
Archbishop of Oklahoma City
